English Springer Spaniel

By James C. • Updated

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized British flushing gundog, bred to find game and "spring" it into the air for the hunter. It is friendly, biddable and very energetic, and is equally at home as a family companion or a working dog in the field. The breed standard gives a height of approximately 51 cm, and most adults weigh about 18 to 25 kg. Show lines are heavier with longer feathering, while working lines are lighter, shorter-coated and more driven. A UK study of nearly 18,000 English Springers found a median lifespan of 13.5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for active families. English Springers are friendly, affectionate and usually excellent with children, and the breed standard calls for a happy, biddable temperament. They need around two hours of exercise daily, and show-line dogs are generally calmer at home than working lines.
Pros include a friendly nature, easy training, good health and a median lifespan of 13.5 years in UK data. Cons include very high exercise needs, moderate grooming, ear infections, shedding and barking or chewing when bored. Working lines can be too intense for quiet homes.
Not usually, if they are well exercised. Dogs NSW rates barking as low and notes they are noisy with intruders but not guard dogs. Bored, under-exercised or lonely Springers often bark more, so daily exercise and mental work are the best prevention.
They shed a moderate amount year round, with heavier shedding in spring and autumn. Brushing once or twice a week keeps loose hair under control and prevents tangles in the feathering. Show-line dogs carry more coat than working lines, so they need more brushing and trimming.
Expect about $2,500 to $4,500 for a registered puppy. A show-line litter in NSW was priced at $3,000 in October 2026, earlier litters asked $2,500 to $3,500, and the Dogz Online cost guide quotes $3,000 to $7,000. Rescue adoption usually costs $400 to $900.
The English Springer is the larger of the two, at about 51 cm and 18 to 25 kg, while the Cocker is smaller and lighter. Both are friendly flushing gundogs, but Springers generally need more exercise. The breeds were separated mainly by size in the early 1900s.
