Curly Coated Retriever

By James C. • Updated

The Curly Coated Retriever is one of the oldest retriever breeds, developed in England for wildfowling and retrieving from cold water, and the tallest of the retrievers. Its coat is a dense mass of small, tight, crisp curls in black or liver, which sheds little and should not be brushed. Dogs stand about 66 to 69 cm and bitches about 61 to 64 cm, and most weigh 27 to 32 kg. It is intelligent, independent and slow to mature, more reserved with strangers than a Labrador, and needs plenty of exercise. It is a different breed from the Australian Murray River Retriever, and only a handful of breeders keep it in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for active and patient owners. Curlies are affectionate, gentle with family and usually good with other pets. They need an hour or more of exercise daily, mature slowly and are more independent than Labradors, so they suit experienced owners better than first-timers.
Very rare in Australia. Dogz Online listed nine breeders, including New Zealand, and just one litter in October 2026. Most buyers join a waiting list, contact the state breed clubs and are prepared to travel or arrange transport to collect a puppy.
No. The tight curls shed less visibly than a Labrador's coat, although many Curlies drop coat seasonally and bitches often lose coat after a litter. The coat should never be brushed, and no dog is truly hypoallergenic, so allergy sufferers should meet the breed first.
Expect about $3,000 to $4,000 from a registered Australian breeder. No Australian price was advertised in October 2026, so the range is derived from US prices of about USD 1,500 to USD 2,500 plus a premium for very limited local supply.
No. The Murray River Retriever is a separate Australian gundog, recognised by Dogs Australia from 2022, that stands 46 to 53 cm and is solid liver. The Curly Coated Retriever is an older English breed, considerably taller, and comes in black or liver.
Most live about 10 to 14 years. DOGS NSW gives 13 to 14 years, while Hill's quotes 8 to 12, and the difference reflects limited data for a small breed. Health-tested parents, a lean weight and regular vet care give the best chance of a long life.
