Welsh Terrier

By James C. • Updated

The Welsh Terrier is one of the oldest British terrier types, bred in Wales to work alongside hounds after fox, otter and badger. It is friendly, confident and energetic, usually good with family members and more even-tempered than many terriers, though it keeps a strong prey drive and a love of digging. Adults stand up to 39 cm and weigh around 9 to 9.5 kg, with a hard, wiry black and tan coat that sheds little but needs regular grooming. It is recognised by Dogs Australia in Group 2, Terriers, but supply in Australia is very limited, with only a handful of registered breeders and waiting lists the norm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for active families. Welsh Terriers are friendly, playful and sturdy, and they usually do well with school-age children. They need around an hour of exercise daily, secure fencing and consistent training, and they are not ideal with small caged pets because of their prey drive.
Welsh Terriers are not usually excessive barkers, but they will bark to alert you to visitors, noises and animals. Boredom and long periods alone increase barking. Daily exercise, mental stimulation and early training keep most Welsh Terriers at a reasonable noise level.
They are moderate to high maintenance. Welsh Terriers need around an hour of exercise a day, weekly brushing and professional stripping or clipping every few months. They are generally healthy, but owners should be aware of eye conditions and skin allergies and keep up regular vet checks.
Welsh Terriers shed very little because their wiry coat holds dead hair until it is brushed or stripped out. Low shedding is not the same as hypoallergenic, since allergens are also in skin flakes and saliva, so allergy sufferers should meet the breed before committing.
No. There is no recognised miniature Welsh Terrier in the breed standard. Dogs advertised as miniature are usually small individuals, crosses or unregistered dogs. A genuine Welsh Terrier stands up to 39 cm and weighs around 9 to 9.5 kg.
No Welsh Terrier puppy price was publicly advertised in Australia in October 2026, when only one litter was listed with price on request. Buyers need to contact breeders directly. Ongoing costs include grooming of about $210 to $900 a year and insurance of around $1,580 to $1,693.
