Deerhound

By James C. • Updated

The Deerhound, widely known as the Scottish Deerhound, is a giant, rough-coated sighthound bred in the Scottish Highlands to course red deer. It is gentle, dignified and quiet at home, often sleeping for much of the day, yet capable of explosive speed and a strong chase instinct outdoors. Males stand at least 76 cm and usually weigh 39 to 50 kg, with females a little smaller. Like most giant breeds it has a short lifespan of around 8 to 11 years, and owners should be aware of heart disease, bloat and bone cancer. Breeders are few in Australia and litters are infrequent, so waiting lists are normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for the right home. Deerhounds are gentle, quiet and affectionate, and adults sleep much of the day. They need a large, securely fenced yard, daily free running and an owner who accepts that their strong chase instinct makes off-lead walks near roads unsafe.
The Irish Wolfhound is bigger. It is generally taller and much heavier, with a more massive build. The Deerhound is lighter, finer-boned and more Greyhound-like, with males standing at least 76 cm and usually weighing 39 to 50 kg.
Most Deerhounds live around 8 to 11 years. Hill's Australia gives 8 to 11 years and Dogs NSW says 9 or 10, sometimes more, with females tending to outlive males. Heart disease, bloat, bone cancer and road accidents are the main risks.
No. The breed standard describes Deerhounds as gentle and friendly, never suspicious, aggressive or nervous. They make poor guard dogs. Their chase instinct towards running animals is strong, though, so cats and small pets can be at risk outdoors.
Expect around $3,500 to $4,500 for a registered puppy. Dogz Online showed no Deerhound litters in October 2026, and the latest priced Australian listing found asked $4,000 to $4,500. Waiting lists are normal, and giant-breed running costs are high.
No. "Irish Deerhound" is a common mix-up between the Scottish Deerhound and the Irish Wolfhound. The two are closely related rough-coated sighthounds, but the Deerhound comes from Scotland and the Wolfhound from Ireland, and they are separate recognised breeds.
